How we’re helping
Change the Story
The Changing the Story Reading Programme was developed by
the National Literacy Trust in partnership with Hachette UK. Between
2021 and 2024, the National Literacy Trust and Hachette Learning delivered
the programme in schools around the UK.
Created to support struggling readers in disadvantaged primary schools,
Changing the Story has proved the positive impact Reading Planet can
have on reading attainment and enjoyment.
In each participating school, selected groups of learners used our books
and eBooks for regular guided and independent reading sessions.
Key 昀椀ndings 2021-2024:
Data from Hachette Learning reading assessments indicated signi昀椀cant
improvement in pupils’ reading ability over the course of the Changing the
Story programme.*
Before taking part in the programme, on average, pupils’ standardised score
was 86.6. After taking part, this had increased to 95.0% for these pupils.
The percentage of pupils who were below the national average in their reading
decreased from half (50.7%) at the start of the programme to 1 in 4 (27%) at the
end.
The percentage of pupils who said they enjoyed reading ‘very much’, increased
from 25.5% before taking part to 39.0% after taking part.

attainment, providing standardised scores and diagnostic analyses. Comparisons against
national averages are based on the 2019-21 standardisation of a nationally-representative
